This is the first in a new monthly series of CLIL Professional Learning Circles the Lab is setting up for 2025, intended as regular but informal, casual spaces for any teachers and researchers interested in CLIL to discuss current issues, share ideas, and learn together! Tracing the Path of Bilingual Education in Ireland: Reflections and Future Directions
This presentation will examine bilingual education models in Ireland that use Irish, a minority language, as the primary medium for instruction, communication, and socialisation. It will highlight how these models contribute to language revitalization, offering insights into their structure, key research findings, and future prospects.

Presenters
Dr T.J. Ó Ceallaigh is an Associate Professor at the School of Education, University College Cork, Ireland. His research examines teacher education, development and leadership, with particular reference to language immersion and bilingual contexts. His research interests also include transformative digital pedagogies and learning design. He is an appointed member of the European Commission Working Group on Digital Education: Learning, Teaching and Assessment (DELTA). He is also an elected member of the Administrative Council of the Association of Teacher Educators in Europe (ATEE) and is co-chair of the ATEE Teacher Education and Digital Technology Research and Development Community.
Máire Uí Chonghaile is a part-time lecturer at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick and at University College Cork, Ireland. Current research topics include integration of language and curriculum content in second language immersion settings. Teaching and learning in early years’ settings is also a focus of her research. She provides professional development for primary and post-primary teachers and principals undertaking a degree at master’s level in immersion education. She has written papers on the topic of bilingualism at preschool, primary and post-primary level. She was a school principal for almost 20 years prior to working as a senior inspector in the Inspectorate of the Department of Education, Ireland.
