“Nah she’s a good gardia”: My accidental journey into Indigenous educational research and what I’ve learnt along the way.

In this presentation I will outline some of the studies I have undertaken in the last two decades within the Indigenous education area. I will describe some of the approaches I have used and what I have learnt from this research journey. I will also describe the importance of relationships, honesty, deep listening and how important it is to work with Aboriginal people as an ally and accomplice.

Professor Rhonda Oliver is widely published in the area of second language and second dialect acquisition. Internationally she is best known for her work in relation to child language learners, interaction and task-based language teaching. More recently she has undertaken work in the area of Aboriginal education, particularly for those students who have Standard Australia English as their second language or dialect. This led to her award-winning textbook, co-edited with Marnee Shay (UQ): Indigenous Education in Australia Learning and Teaching for Deadly Futures.
